Naseem Shah joins SNGPL for the ongoing President's Trophy

Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah has joined Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) for the ongoing domestic season and will be available for the team's third-round match in the President's Trophy, beginning Thursday. An SNGPL official confirmed that Naseem will remain available for the team for the rest of the tournament. The fast bowler was not included in any of the eight department squads when the Pakistan Cricket Board initially announced the teams. Abdullah Shafique and Farhan Yousaf Also Join SNGPL Naseem is not the only Pakistan player to link up with SNGPL ahead of the third round. Test batter Abdullah Shafique and Pakistan Under-19 captain Farhan Yousaf have also joined the squad. SNGPL will face Markhor IT Solutions in Peshawar in their third-round fixture. The addition of several established players could provide a boost to SNGPL, who have endured a difficult start to the competition. The team currently sits at the bottom of the points table after collecting just one point from a draw and a defeat in their opening two matches. Central Contracts Increase Domestic Commitments A significant number of Pakistan internationals are participating in the President's Trophy this season following changes to the central contract structure. The newly introduced contracts make domestic first-class cricket a mandatory part of the season for centrally contracted players. Those in category A, which covers Test specialists, must play at least six domestic first-class matches. Players in category AB, covering Test and ODI specialists, are required to feature in at least four first-class matches, while players in category BC, which is designated for white-ball specialists, must play at least two first-class matches during the season. The policy has resulted in several Pakistan internationals making themselves available for domestic cricket. Naseem Looking to Build Red-Ball Momentum Naseem's return to first-class cricket comes after a lengthy gap in his red-ball career. His most recent Test appearance came in December 2024, when Pakistan suffered a two-wicket defeat against South Africa in Centurion. Naseem missed the second Test after developing chest congestion and was subsequently left out of Pakistan's squad for their home Test series against the West Indies. Pakistan opted for a spin-heavy bowling approach during that series, further limiting Naseem's opportunities in Test cricket. Since his last Test, Naseem has played only one domestic first-class match. That came for Lahore Region Whites against Islamabad Region in the previous Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, while his involvement in Pakistan's home T20I and ODI series against South Africa restricted his domestic appearances. Sri Lanka Tests Provide Another Target Naseem will now have an opportunity to build match fitness and make a case for a return to Pakistan's Test setup. Pakistan are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in home Tests in November, with a limited-overs series preceding the red-ball matches. Naseem's performances in the President's Trophy could therefore be important as selectors assess their fast-bowling options. Pakistan's pace attack has faced scrutiny over recent performances, particularly regarding bowling speed and the ability to consistently generate movement with both the new and old ball. Naseem has previously been recognised for his pace, movement and control, qualities that made him an important part of Pakistan's attack after his international debut. SNGPL Looking for a Turnaround SNGPL enter the third round under pressure after a difficult opening to the President's Trophy. The runners-up in the previous edition have collected only one point from their first two matches. Naseem's arrival, along with Abdullah Shafique and Farhan Yousaf, gives the side additional international and emerging talent as they look to revive their campaign.
