Green and Renshaw suffer injury concerns ahead of Test series

Australia’s preparations for their upcoming Test series against South Africa have been thrown into disarray following a troubled conclusion to the ODI tour. Alongside a mounting injury list, the team faces anxious waits over all-rounder Cameron Green and batter Matt Renshaw, both of whom sustained painful blows during the rain-truncated third ODI in Potchefstroom on Wednesday. New Injury Scares for Green and Renshaw The drama unfolded during the final ODI, adding heavy concern to the Australian camp with the first Test looming on October 9 in Durban. Cameron Green's Double Blow: Green took a painful hit to the groin while batting. Just two balls later, he appeared in further discomfort after swinging hard on the delivery that brought about his dismissal. He had been slated to bowl a few overs—which would have marked his first bowling spell of the entire tour due to an ongoing shoulder recovery—but ultimately did not take the field when South Africa began their innings. Matt Renshaw's Wrist Injury: Fielding at a perilous close square leg position to Adam Zampa at the start of the 14th over, Renshaw copped a powerful pull shot from Ryan Rickelton straight onto his right wrist. He winced visibly in pain and left the field immediately at the end of the over, taking no further part in the match before rain brought an early end to proceedings. Stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh admitted after the match that he had not yet spoken to the pair, but expressed optimism that both would recover in time for the Test opener. Regarding Green, Marsh noted that missing out on a planned bowling spell was unfortunate, but remained hopeful it would not disrupt his red-ball preparation. A Depleted Squad and Lingering Concerns Australia’s medical staff is already working overtime. The squad's depth has been severely tested following prior injuries to Josh Inglis (broken finger), Nathan Ellis (side strain), Jack Edwards (hamstring), and Joel Davies (hamstring). The crisis left Australia with only 12 fit players available for the final ODI. With Josh Hazlewood rested to manage his workload ahead of the red-ball fixtures, Test squad members Marnus Labuschagne and Beau Webster were forced onto the field as substitute fielders. Josh Inglis remains back in Australia recovering from his fractured finger. Although selectors have not yet ruled him out of the Test series, they have refrained from naming a replacement with under a week and a half until the first Test. Australia requires a backup wicketkeeper in the squad in case of a late injury or concussion to incumbent gloveman Alex Carey, especially since Inglis is also one of only two reserve batters in the Test squad alongside Cooper Connolly. Mitch Marsh Rules Out Test Return, Cummins Returns to Action Amid the injury gloom, Mitchell Marsh addressed persistent rumors about a potential return to Test cricket. Having retired from domestic first-class cricket and played his last Test in December 2024, Marsh confirmed he will be heading home after the ODI series. While Test captain Pat Cummins recently hinted in the media that the door remains open for Marsh's red-ball comeback, the all-rounder played down the likelihood, joking that he wouldn't be good enough to walk straight back into the format without recent red-ball practice, having not played a multi-day game since late last year. On a brighter note for the tourists, Test captain Pat Cummins made a welcome return to international cricket. Playing his first ODI in roughly two years, Cummins successfully bowled five unscathed overs, though Marsh retained leadership duties for the match. Cummins is expected to resume full captaincy responsibilities as Australia shifts focus to the multi-format battle against South Africa.
