IPL 2027 auction to be held in Goa in December

The IPL 2027 auction will be held in Goa in December, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed. The event will mark a return to India for the league's player auction after the previous three auctions were staged outside the country. Saikia confirmed the venue and month while speaking to ANI on Wednesday, saying the BCCI would host the auction in Goa after previous events were held in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The auction is expected to take place in the second week of December and will be the final mini-auction of the current 2023-27 IPL cycle. Goa to Host IPL Auction After Three Overseas Events The IPL's previous three auctions were held at overseas venues. The 2024 mega-auction took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, while the subsequent mini-auction was held in Abu Dhabi. With the IPL 2027 auction, the BCCI will bring the event back to India and stage it in Goa. The exact date has not yet been officially announced, although the auction is expected to be held during the second week of December. IPL 2027 Season Expected to Start in March The IPL had previously announced a window of March 14 to May 30 for the 2027 season. However, following the recent BCCI Annual General Meeting, Saikia indicated that the tournament would begin towards the end of March. The final dates for IPL 2027 have not yet been confirmed. The auction will therefore be an important step in preparations for the upcoming season, with franchises expected to assess their squads before deciding on retentions and releases. Several Major Team Changes Already Underway A number of significant player and coaching changes have already taken place ahead of IPL 2027. Rishabh Pant has returned to Delhi Capitals, while Kuldeep Yadav has moved from Delhi Capitals to Lucknow Super Giants in a high-profile exchange between the two franchises. Chennai Super Kings have also made a major change to their coaching setup, appointing former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach. Kolkata Knight Riders face a leadership decision after Ajinkya Rahane retired from international and Indian cricket, leaving the franchise looking for a new captain. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have added Zubin Bharucha as their director of performance. Retention Deadline Yet to Be Announced The IPL has not yet announced the deadline for teams to finalise their retained players. The deadline is generally expected towards the end of November, before franchises enter the auction process. The retention list will provide the first major indication of how teams intend to shape their squads for the 2027 season. Players released into the auction pool could then attract significant interest during the December event. RCB Enter as Defending Champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will enter IPL 2027 as the defending champions after winning consecutive titles in 2025 and 2026. With the auction marking the final mini-auction of the 2023-27 cycle, franchises will have another opportunity to strengthen their squads before the next phase of the IPL begins.
