Pakistan withdraw from World Championship of Legends after PCB refuse NOCs

The Pakistan Champions have officially withdrawn from the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL) after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) refused to issue the necessary No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for the team. The tournament kicked off on October 3, with an opening match between India and Australia. However, Pakistan's scheduled opening fixture against Bangladesh had to be postponed while tournament organizers attempted to reach an agreement with the PCB. Organizers were even willing to reschedule Pakistan's matches to buy time, but as the team's match against Australia approached, it became clear that a resolution would not be reached. Behind the Deadlock The refusal stems from a firm stance taken by the PCB following controversies from last year's tournament, where the Pakistan Champions finished as runners-up to South Africa. Last year, the PCB issued a blanket ban on future participation, accusing the competition of "hypocrisy and bias" and mixing politics with sport. The board's ire was originally provoked when India withdrew from two contests against Pakistan during the previous tournament, including a semi-final and a group-stage match. While Pakistan received a walkover in the semi-final, the PCB strongly objected to India being awarded a point for their group-stage withdrawal, labeling it an unacceptable message to the international sporting community. Despite WCL officials attempting to secure the required clearances this year, the PCB stood its ground and upheld the ban. Statement From the Team Management In an official statement released to Cricinfo, the Pakistan Champions expressed their disappointment while acknowledging the board's authority: "Pakistan Champions regret to confirm that the team will not be able to participate in the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL), following the Pakistan Cricket Board's decision to uphold its refusal to issue the required NOC." Team owner Kamil Khan had formally requested the board to reconsider its stance and remained in active discussions to salvage their participation. "We respect PCB's authority and its decision, while naturally being disappointed that our players will not have the opportunity to represent Pakistan Champions at this global gathering of cricketing legends. We sincerely thank our players, supporters and fans for their patience, understanding and continued support," the statement added. Star-Studded Squad Benched The withdrawal comes as a major blow to fans who were eager to see legendary cricketers back in action. The Pakistan Champions squad was set to be captained by star all-rounder Shahid Afridi and featured a formidable lineup of veterans, including Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Sarfraz Ahmed, and Wahab Riaz. With the deadlock remaining unresolved and the schedule progressing, the team has formally bowed out, leaving a notable void in this year's global gathering of cricketing legends.
