After nearly two decades of unwavering dedication, resilience, and stellar domestic dominance, former New Zealand opening batsman Jeet Raval has officially announced his retirement from professional cricket ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. Closing the curtain on a journey that began back in December 2008, Raval leaves behind a rich legacy as one of New Zealand's finest modern-day opening stalwarts and a deeply respected leader in domestic circles. A Journey of Sacrifice and Dreams Raval's story is one of profound dedication. Born in the Indian state of Gujarat—where he famously served as Parthiv Patel's opening partner during their school cricket days in Ahmedabad—Raval and his family made a life-changing move to Auckland when he was in his teens to help him chase his cricketing aspirations. Reflecting on his retirement, Raval expressed deep gratitude: "It's with a great honour and a privilege that I made this decision. I feel at peace and very content. The childhood dream [was] obviously to play for Black Caps and I look back with pride. It wasn't just my dream, [but] also my father's dream as well. We saw an opportunity and he moved the family here so I could have an opportunity to live my dream." Pillar of the Black Caps Having made his Test debut against Pakistan in Christchurch in 2016, Raval went on to play 24 Test matches for New Zealand until 2020. Though he notched seven half-centuries before scoring his maiden Test ton, he was an integral anchor at the top of the order during one of the most successful eras in New Zealand's Test history. He was part of the historic squad that triumphed in the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) cycle in 2021. Looking back at the internal support he received during lean patches, Raval credited senior leaders like Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor for making him feel valued and keeping him at ease, even amidst external pressures. Domestic Dominance and Leadership While his international career concluded in 2020, Raval remained an unstoppable force on the domestic circuit, turning out for Auckland, Central Districts, and Northern Districts (ND). The 10,000-Run Club: In December 2025, while captaining ND, Raval etched his name in history by becoming the 30th New Zealander to cross 10,000 first-class runs. Plunket Shield Legend: He accumulated a staggering 8,662 runs in the four-day Plunket Shield alone, placing him fourth on the all-time list behind only Michael Papps, Matthew Sinclair, and Peter Fulton. Across his first-class career, he opened the batting in 285 innings, amassing 10,127 runs at an average of 37.36 with 23 centuries. Captaincy and Part-Time Magic: Raval led Northern Districts to their drought-breaking Plunket Shield title in the 2024-25 season—their first in over a decade. Displaying his versatility, he also chipped in with useful part-time legspin during that campaign, picking up 14 wickets at an incredible average of 11.14, including a memorable maiden five-wicket haul. Ian Sandbrook, ND's general manager of cricket, paid tribute to his immense contribution: "From an ND perspective, Jeet has been the ultimate senior pro and leader since joining us. His runs and calm leadership will be missed. More than anything, though, Jeet is a great man. Respected, loyal, and an outstanding team-mate that has always given his best." Looking Ahead As he walks away from the professional game, Raval leaves behind fond memories of slip-catching excellence, gritty opening stands, and leadership masterclasses. Having already dipped his toes into coaching—serving as an assistant coach for the Samoa national team—and established a successful career off the field as a chartered accountant for an auditing firm, Raval enters this next chapter of life with the same quiet poise and dedication that defined his legendary cricket career.
