Gareth Batty leaves Surrey to join CSK coaching staff

Gareth Batty is stepping down as Surrey’s head coach after a legendary association with the club to begin an exciting new chapter in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 49-year-old former England spinner is set to join the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coaching staff as an assistant coach, reuniting with his former Worcestershire team-mate Zaheer Khan. Batty’s departure marks the end of a remarkable 21-year association with Surrey, spanning both his playing and coaching careers. A Golden Legacy at Surrey After concluding his playing career with Surrey in 2021, Batty seamlessly transitioned into the head coaching role. What followed was one of the most dominant spells in modern county cricket. Under Batty's leadership, Surrey achieved a historic three-peat, winning consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024. They followed up their title treble with a strong runner-up finish behind Nottinghamshire in 2025. Beyond his time in red-ball cricket, Batty built an impressive coaching portfolio across franchise tournaments, serving as an assistant coach for the title-winning Oval Invincibles in 2025 and working with MI London in the rebranded competition earlier this year. However, the recent domestic season proved challenging for the London-based county. Surrey narrowly avoided relegation to finish seventh in the County Championship and missed out on the knockout stages of both the T20 Blast and the One-Day Cup. Moving to the Yellow Brigade Batty’s move to CSK comes amidst a massive back-room overhaul for the five-time IPL champions. The shift was triggered by long-time CSK head coach Stephen Fleming accepting the role of England Test head coach, subsequently bringing assistant coaches Eric Simons and James Foster into the England setup. With Zaheer Khan taking over key coaching duties at CSK, Batty’s tactical mind and extensive experience will add vital depth to the franchise’s support staff as they look to build a new era of success. Heartfelt Goodbyes and High Praise Reflecting on his deep connection with the club, Batty shared an emotional message upon the announcement of his departure: "Thank you hardly seems enough for all that Surrey has meant to me. It has been a privilege to serve this great club, to share in its success and challenges. The new journey is a very exciting one for my family and I with CSK in the IPL and I'm looking forward to getting going." Surrey Director of Cricket Alec Stewart paid glowing tribute to Batty's tireless work ethic, leadership, and dedication to the club: "I have known and worked with Gareth for many years, and throughout that time he has shown an outstanding commitment to this club. As a player and then as captain he has always put the team first and played a significant role in helping to move the club forward. "He has a passion and knowledge for the game as well as a determination to get the very best out of himself and those around him. When he made the transition into coaching, he brought those same qualities with him. His achievement in leading the side to three consecutive County Championship titles is a reflection of his hard work, his understanding of the players and his fierce will to win."
